Knowing Your Skin Type

Everyone’s skin is different.

We all need different products, treatments and routines to target our skin concerns. Whether you have a super-long skin regime, or a short and simple one, what’s really important is that you are using products that are suited to your skin type. We know that there are 3 main skin types. Dry, Oily and Normal. Sometimes, you may have more than one skin type. This is called “Combination” skin.

In today’s blog, we are going to make it easy for you. You’ll find out the importance of knowing your skin type, as well as finding out exactly what skin type you have and how’s best to start your skin journey.

The Importance of Knowing Your Skin Type

By now, you’ll know that there are 3 main skin types. Skin types are determined by genetics. However, how you treat your skin, along with some external and internal factors, can contribute to your overall skin condition.

Knowing your skin type is so important. This is the first step when beginning your Skin Care Routine and finding products that are going to promote healthy skin.

A Skin Expert will always tell you how important it is to ensure that the products that you are using on your skin are suited to your skin type. When purchasing products, ALWAYS have your skin type in mind. Using products that are not recommended for your skin type can promote skin problems, and even aggravate existing conditions. Certain products can be far to harsh when used on the wrong skin type.

Save yourself time and money and use the correct products for your skin type. You never want to be causing more damage to your skin, especially when the ultimate goal is Skin Health.

The 3 Main Skin Types

Normal Skin:

A normal skin type is probably the most uncommon skin type. Since working in the beauty industry, this is not a skin type that I’ve come across very often. Someone with a normal skin type, has almost no problems/concerns with their skin. A normal skin type is known for having a radiant complexion. This skin type will have VERY FEW imperfections, no visible pores and near enough no sensitivity. The skin will not feel dry, nor too oily. It will display a clear and even tone, as well as having a smooth texture. Imagine characteristics found in young children and babies. The skin looks perfect. Normal skin, describes near perfect skin with no-to only a few visible skin imperfections.

Oily Skin:

An oily skin type is exactly what it says. The skin is producing too much oil which results in a constant shiny or greasy appearance. Someone who has an oily skin type should treat it correctly. Incorrect use of products can result in the pores becoming larger and blocked. This can cause blackheads and spots. Other types of acne are also common with this skin type.

Dry Skin:

Dry skin generally looks and feels dry to touch. The reason for this is because the skin is lacking moisture in the outer layer. The skin can also appear to have cracks in the surface, it can look scaly, red and it can also look tight. Unfortunately, dry skin can be quite sensitive. Meaning that it can often react to certain products easily. Irritation can also be quite common with a dry skin type, causing it to be quite itchy. If itching or scratching happens, this can cause the skin to be inflamed.
